About
Formats CSS with consistent indentation, making it easier to read, review and maintain styles.
What is a CSS formatter and how to use it
The CSS formatter organizes stylesheets with indentation, line breaks, and consistent spacing, turning compact or messy CSS into readable code. It helps you review and maintain styles far more efficiently.
CSS files in production are often minified to save bytes, but that makes them unreadable. The formatter adds a line break after each declaration and indentation for each selector, revealing the structure of every style rule.
Besides indentation, the tool standardizes spacing: one space after the colon, one declaration per line, and well-aligned braces. The result follows the conventions most teams already adopt.
The formatter does not validate properties or values — it only organizes presentation. To detect CSS errors (nonexistent property, invalid value), use a linter or the browser console.
Examples
- Input: .card{color:#333;margin:10px;padding:5px} → Output: each declaration on its own line, indented.
- Nested rules with @media gain extra indentation, making the scope of each style clear.
Limitations
- The formatter does not check whether properties or values are valid — it only improves readability.
- Preprocessors (SCSS/LESS) can be formatted, but features like mixins and nesting may lose ideal alignment.
How to use the CSS formatter
- 1Paste the CSS into the main field.
- 2Click Process to format.
- 3Copy the tidy CSS with one click.
Frequently asked questions
Does the formatter work with SCSS or LESS?
Largely yes, since the base syntax is similar. Advanced features like mixins and nesting can be formatted, but ideal alignment is not guaranteed.
Is my CSS changed semantically?
No. The formatter only reorganizes spaces, line breaks, and indentation. Rules, selectors, and values stay identical.
Does processing happen in the browser?
Yes. The CSS never leaves your device, so there is no risk of exposing proprietary code.
