About
Formats and validates JSON with 2-space indentation, right in the browser. Perfect for reading and debugging API responses without effort.
What is a JSON formatter and how to use it
JSON is the standard format for exchanging data between applications, but when it arrives minified — with no spaces or line breaks — it is almost impossible to read. The UtilNexo JSON formatter organizes the structure with indentation so you can understand and debug it quickly.
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight, text-based format that uses key-value pairs and lists. It is used by virtually every modern API, NoSQL database, and configuration file. The problem is that, in production, JSON is often compressed to save bytes, becoming one giant single line.
The formatter does what is called pretty print: it adds line breaks and 2-space indentation, aligning keys, values, objects, and arrays. This lets you see the data hierarchy at a glance and spot syntax errors, duplicate keys, or misplaced values.
Besides formatting, the tool also validates the structure. If there is a trailing comma, an unquoted key, or an unclosed bracket, the error is flagged so you can fix it before using the JSON in your project.
Examples
- Input: {"name":"Ana","age":30} → Output: { "name": "Ana", "age": 30 } (each key on its own line with 2 spaces).
- Input: {"a":1,} → Output: Could not process this data. Please check the format provided.
Limitations
- Formatting does not change the JSON semantics — only the presentation. Single-quoted keys or comments (common in JSONC) may be rejected.
- Very large files (tens of MB) can freeze the browser; for those cases, prefer a code editor.
How to use the JSON formatter
- 1Paste the JSON into the main field.
- 2Click Process to format and validate.
- 3Copy the tidy JSON with one click.
Frequently asked questions
What does "invalid JSON" mean?
It means the syntax has an error — a trailing comma, missing quotes, an unclosed bracket, and so on. The formatter points out the problem so you can fix it.
Can I format nested JSON?
Yes. Nested objects and arrays at any depth are indented hierarchically, making them easier to read.
Is my data sent to any server?
No. Formatting happens 100% in the browser, and your JSON never leaves the device.
