About

Encodes and decodes Base64 quickly and locally, without sending your data. Useful for data URIs, tokens and carrying data as text.

What is Base64 and what is it used for

Base64 is an encoding scheme that turns binary data into text using a safe set of 64 characters — uppercase letters (A–Z), lowercase letters (a–z), digits (0–9), and the symbols + and /. It is used to carry non-text data over channels that only accept text.

The core idea is simple: instead of transmitting raw bytes, Base64 represents them as safe characters. Every group of three bytes becomes four Base64 characters, and the = sign is appended when needed to complete the last block. That is why a Base64 string is usually about 33% larger than the original data.

In practice, you will find Base64 in many everyday digital places: images embedded in HTML and CSS via data URIs, email attachments in the MIME standard, basic authentication credentials in HTTP, JWT tokens, and even file serialization inside JSON and XML.

It is important not to confuse encoding with encryption. Base64 does not protect data — anyone with the string can decode it. It is only for representation and transport, never for security. To actually protect information, use encryption such as AES or HTTPS.

Examples

  • Encode: "Hello, World!" → SGVsbG8sIFdvcmxkIQ==
  • Decode: T2zDoSwgbXVuZG8h → "Olá, mundo!"

Limitations

  • Base64 is not encryption: anyone can reverse the encoded text.
  • The output is about 33% larger than the original, so it does not reduce size.
  • Some implementations omit the = padding, which can cause incompatibility between tools.

How to use the Base64 converter

  1. 1Choose the operation: Encode to turn text into Base64, or Decode to reverse it.
  2. 2Type or paste the content into the main field.
  3. 3Click Process and copy the result with one click.

Frequently asked questions about Base64

Is Base64 a type of encryption?

No. Base64 is only an encoding that represents data as text. Anyone can reverse the conversion; to protect data, use encryption such as AES or TLS.

Why does a Base64 string end with =?

The = sign is padding. Since every 3 bytes become 4 characters, when the total number of bytes is not a multiple of 3, one or two = are added to complete the final block.

Is the Base64 output larger than the original text?

Yes, by about 33%. Base64 uses 4 characters to represent 3 bytes, so the size grows by one third relative to the original binary.
