About
Compacts CSS by removing spaces and comments to reduce size and improve site performance.
What is a CSS minifier and when to use it
The CSS minifier removes unnecessary spaces, comments, line breaks, and semicolons to reduce the stylesheet size. It is an essential step before publishing a site, as it shortens page load times.
Every byte removed from CSS is one less byte transferred to each visitor. Minification removes comments and formatting characters without changing how styles behave — the rules still work exactly the same.
For large files, minification can reduce size by 30% to 60%, depending on the amount of comments and spacing. For high-traffic sites, that saving directly impacts speed and bandwidth cost.
Minification does not replace gzip/brotli compression, which acts on another layer. The ideal is to minify CSS at build time and serve the already-compressed result from the server.
Examples
- Input: .card { color: #333; margin: 10px; } → Output: .card{color:#333;margin:10px}
- A 50 KB CSS file with many comments can drop to about 30 KB after minification.
Limitations
- Minification does not fix syntax errors — if the CSS is invalid, the output will remain invalid.
- Selectors and properties are preserved, so there is no gain if the file is already minified.
How to use the CSS minifier
- 1Paste the CSS into the main field.
- 2Click Process to compact.
- 3Copy the minified CSS with one click.
Frequently asked questions
Can minifying CSS break my styles?
No, as long as the CSS is valid. Minification removes only formatting characters and comments, preserving all rules and selectors.
Should I minify before or after writing?
Minify only in the production version. For development, keep the CSS formatted and readable.
Is minifying the same as compressing?
No. Minifying removes redundant characters; compressing (gzip/brotli) applies packing algorithms. Use both together for the best result.
