How to convert CSV to JSON

The converter turns a CSV table into a JSON array of objects, using the first row as the header and each following row as an object. It is the fastest way to bring spreadsheet data into applications and APIs.

Spreadsheets export data as CSV, but modern applications consume JSON. The conversion reads the header to name the keys and creates one object per row, with values already converted to the most likely type (number, text, or boolean).

The result is JSON ready to use in APIs, configure NoSQL databases, or feed front-ends. The conversion preserves the relationship between columns and fields, keeping the data organized.

Before converting, check that the first row of the CSV contains the column names. If there is no header, the converter may use generic names like column1, column2.

Examples

  • Input: "name,age Ana,30 John,25" → Output: [{"name":"Ana","age":30},{"name":"John","age":25}]
  • Quoted numbers are treated as text, while unquoted numbers become numbers.

Limitations

  • CSVs with a non-comma separator (such as semicolon) need to be adapted before conversion.
  • Values with commas inside quotes are handled correctly, but malformed CSVs can produce unpredictable results.

Frequently asked questions

Does the first row need to be the header?

Yes, ideally the first row should contain the column names. Without it, the converter uses generic names.

Are numbers converted automatically?

Yes. Values that look like numbers are converted to the numeric type; the rest stay as text.

Does it work with a semicolon separator?

The tool expects a comma separator. For other separators, adapt the CSV before converting.
