About

Formats SQL queries with indentation and line breaks, making the code readable for review and maintenance.

What is an SQL formatter and how to use it

The SQL formatter organizes queries into a readable structure, placing main clauses on separate lines, capitalizing keywords, and indenting subqueries. It turns a long, compact query into something easy to review and debug.

SQL queries in production are often written on a single line, which makes it hard to understand joins, filters, and ordering. The formatter breaks the query into logical clauses — SELECT, FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, ORDER BY — each on its own line.

Besides line breaks, the tool standardizes the style: uppercase keywords, indented subqueries, and consistent spacing. This makes the code more professional and easier to review as a team.

The formatter does not run the query nor validate it against a specific database — it only improves presentation. To actually validate, run the query on your DBMS or use an SQL analyzer.

Examples

  • Input: SELECT id, name FROM users WHERE active=1 ORDER BY name → Output: each clause on its own line with highlighted keywords.
  • A query with a subquery gains indentation, revealing the relationship between the outer and inner query.

Limitations

  • The formatter does not validate syntax against a specific database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.), so semantic errors can slip through.
  • Dialects with exotic syntax may be formatted imprecisely; when in doubt, review the result manually.

How to use the SQL formatter

  1. 1Paste the SQL query into the main field.
  2. 2Click Process to format.
  3. 3Copy the tidy query with one click.

Frequently asked questions

Does the formatter run my query?

No. It only organizes the text presentation. The query is never sent to a database nor executed.

Does it work with any SQL dialect?

Formatting works for common SQL syntax (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE). Very specific dialects may produce imprecise results.

Can I choose the formatting style?

The tool uses a consistent default style. For custom styles (such as upper/lower case), adjust manually after formatting.
