Weighted Average Calculator
Calculate an average that accounts for the weight of each grade or value.
How to use
- 1Enter the value:weight pairs.
- 2See the weighted average.
About
Calculates the weighted average considering each value's weight, ideal for grades and evaluations with different criteria.
How to calculate the weighted mean
UtilNexo's calculator computes the weighted mean by assigning a different weight to each value, useful for grades with different weights and evaluations.
The formula is: mean = sum(value × weight) ÷ sum(weights). If the exam has weight 3 and you scored 8, and the assignment has weight 2 with a 6, the mean is (8×3 + 6×2) ÷ 5 = 7.2.
Unlike the arithmetic mean, which treats all values equally, the weighted mean reflects the relative importance of each item — essential in report cards and evaluations.
Examples
- 8:3; 6:2 → Weighted mean: 7.20.
- 10:1; 5:3 → Weighted mean: 6.25.
Limitations
- The mean depends on the entered weights; wrong weights distort the result.
- The tool does not interpret specific rounding rules of educational institutions.
How to use the weighted mean calculator
- 1Enter each value with its respective weight.
- 2See the weighted mean.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the weighted mean manually?
Multiply each value by its weight, add everything, and divide by the sum of the weights.
What is the difference from the arithmetic mean?
In the arithmetic mean, all values have the same weight; in the weighted, each has a different importance.
Can I use decimal weights?
Yes. The tool accepts whole and decimal weights.
