About

Formats XML with automatic indentation for easier reading, ideal for config files and feeds.

What is an XML formatter and how to use it

The XML formatter organizes the structure of XML documents with indentation and line breaks, turning compact blocks into a readable tree. It helps you visualize the tag hierarchy and spot nesting errors quickly.

XML is a tag-based format widely used in configurations, system integrations, feeds, and structured documents. When XML arrives unformatted — all on one line — it becomes hard to tell where each element starts and ends.

The formatter pretty-prints the XML: it adds line breaks and indentation proportional to the nesting level, aligning opening and closing tags. This immediately reveals the parent-child structure, attributes, and text.

Besides formatting, the tool validates whether the document is well formed. Unclosed tags, unquoted attributes, or invalid entities are flagged, preventing you from loading broken XML into your system.

Examples

  • Input: <catalog><item id="1"><name>Pen</name></item></catalog> → Output: each tag on its own line with per-level indentation.
  • XML with an unclosed tag, such as <person><name>Ana</person>, triggers an error warning.

Limitations

  • The formatter does not validate against a schema (XSD/DTD) — it only checks whether the XML is well formed.
  • Very large documents (tens of MB) can freeze the browser; in those cases, use a specialized editor.

How to use the XML formatter

  1. 1Paste the XML into the main field.
  2. 2Click Process to format and validate.
  3. 3Copy the tidy XML with one click.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between well-formed and valid XML?

Well formed means the syntax is correct (closed tags, proper nesting). Valid means it also follows a specific schema. The formatter only checks the former.

Does the formatter change the XML content?

No. It only reorganizes spaces and line breaks. Tags, attributes, and text stay exactly the same.

Is my XML sent to any server?

No. Formatting happens 100% in the browser, and your document never leaves the device.
