What is an XML validator and how to use it

The XML validator checks whether a document is well formed — with closed tags, correct nesting, and quoted attributes. It points out exactly where the problem is so you can fix it before using the XML.

XML is a strict format: every opening tag needs a closing one, elements must be nested in the right order, and attributes must always be quoted. A single error breaks the entire document.

The validator walks the XML and, if it finds an unclosed tag, an unquoted attribute, or incorrect nesting, indicates the position and type of the error. This greatly speeds up correction.

It is important to distinguish well-formed XML from valid XML. Well formed means correct syntax; valid means it also follows a schema (XSD/DTD). This tool validates only the basic structure.

Examples

  • Input: <person><name>Ana</name></person> → Output: XML válido.
  • Input: <person><name>Ana</person> → Output: unclosed tag error (invalid XML).

Limitations

  • The validator does not check schema compliance (XSD/DTD) nor validate the meaning of the data.
  • Very large documents can freeze the browser during analysis.

How to use the XML validator

  1. 1Paste the XML into the main field.
  2. 2Click Process to validate.
  3. 3Read the result: well formed, or the position of the error.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between well formed and valid?

Well formed means the syntax is correct. Valid means it also follows a specific schema. This tool checks only the former.

Does the validator accept HTML?

HTML has more flexible rules than XML. An HTML document may be rejected here for not following the strict XML rules.

Is my XML sent to any server?

No. Validation happens 100% in the browser, and your document never leaves the device.
