About

Counts the sentences in a text by ending punctuation, useful for readability analysis and proofreading. Runs 100% in the browser.

How to count sentences in a text

Knowing how many sentences a text has helps you measure writing rhythm, average sentence length, and readability. The UtilNexo sentence counter analyzes ending punctuation and shows the total in real time as you type or paste.

A sentence is delimited by ending punctuation: period, exclamation mark, and question mark. The tool scans the text and counts every block closed by those signs, including ellipses and combinations such as "?!" or "!?".

This metric is especially useful for writers and translators, who often monitor average sentence length to avoid long, hard-to-read texts. Very long sentences signal that the content should be broken into smaller units.

Everything happens locally in the browser. The text is not sent to any server, so you can analyze sensitive documents with full privacy.

Examples

  • Text "Hello. How are you? All good!" → 3 sentences.
  • Text "Wait... I am coming. OK?" → 3 sentences (ellipses also end a sentence).

Limitations

  • Abbreviations such as "Dr.", "Mr.", and "etc." can be read as sentence ends, producing a count slightly above the real value in texts with many abbreviations.
  • Decimal numbers (e.g. "3.5") use a period and, depending on context, can inflate the count. The tool uses heuristics to reduce these errors, but no detection is perfect.

How to use the sentence counter

  1. 1Paste or type the text into the main field.
  2. 2Watch the total number of sentences update automatically.
  3. 3Use the number to adjust sentence rhythm and length.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a sentence?

A sentence is delimited by ending punctuation: period, exclamation mark, and question mark. Ellipses and combined punctuation are also treated as sentence endings.

Does the tool detect abbreviations?

It uses heuristics to reduce common errors with abbreviations, but no detection is infallible. In texts with many abbreviations, the count may diverge slightly.

Does it work in other languages?

Yes, because ending punctuation is nearly universal. Languages that use a period in decimal numbers may show small variations in the count.
