Typing test online: speed, WPM, and accuracy

Test your typing speed in English with a timer that starts on your first key. Measure WPM, CPM, accuracy, and errors without sending typed text to a server.

The test uses the standard five characters per word convention to turn typing rhythm into words per minute (WPM). The main score uses correct characters so mistakes do not inflate the result.

Choose 30 seconds, 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 minutes, or set a custom duration. Original passages are grouped by difficulty and selected locally for the page language.

Accuracy matters too: a steady pace with fewer corrections is usually a better foundation for improving speed. Treat the scores as practice feedback, not a scientific assessment.

How to improve typing speed

Keep your eyes on the passage, reduce corrections, and practice short sessions regularly. Increase difficulty only when accuracy is consistent.

Good hand position, short breaks, and a comfortable keyboard also reduce strain during longer practice sessions.

Speed or accuracy?

Both metrics matter. A high WPM with many mistakes is not efficient typing, so the main score uses correct characters and displays accuracy alongside it.

What the test measures

  • Effective WPM based on correct characters.
  • Total and correct CPM for tracking rhythm.
  • Accuracy, total errors, corrected errors, and errors left in the final text.

Limitations and privacy

  • Speed changes with language, keyboard, device, and familiarity with the topic.
  • Typed text is never sent to analytics, Supabase, or an external API. Optional history stores metrics only on your device.
  • Very short tests can fluctuate more; one- or two-minute tests are easier to compare.

How to take the typing test

  1. 1Choose a duration and difficulty.
  2. 2Start the test and type when ready; the timer begins on the first valid key.
  3. 3Use Backspace to correct mistakes while watching WPM, accuracy, and time.
  4. 4Review the result, keep a local best score, or try another passage.

Frequently asked questions

What does WPM mean?

WPM means estimated words per minute. We use five characters per word and calculate the main score from correct characters.

Does the test upload what I type?

No. Typing is processed in your browser. Optional history stores only duration, difficulty, and aggregate metrics on this device.

Why does my WPM change between languages?

Passages, accents, average word length, and familiarity affect rhythm. Compare results within the same language and duration.

Can I paste a passage?

No. Paste, drag-and-drop, and autofill are blocked to keep the speed test meaningful.
