About

Validates the Brazilian CEP format (with or without hyphen), essential for address forms.

How to validate a CEP correctly

The CEP validator checks whether a Brazilian postal code follows the official 8-digit format. It helps catch typos in delivery and registration forms before they cause logistics problems.

The Brazilian CEP has 8 digits, usually written as 00000-000. The first 5 identify region and sub-region, and the last 3 identify the sector and distribution area. The tool checks that the digit count and format are correct.

It is important to distinguish format from existence. Validation confirms that the number looks like a valid CEP, but does not query the postal service database to know whether that CEP actually exists or which street it belongs to.

The tool accepts the CEP with or without the hyphen and ignores extra spaces, making the check more tolerant of common typing variations in registrations.

Examples

  • 01310-100 → valid (8 digits in the correct format).
  • 0131-100 or 013101000 → invalid (incorrect number of digits).

Limitations

  • Validation is format-based: it does not query the postal service database to confirm whether the CEP exists or which address it represents.
  • CEPs with only zeros (00000-000) may pass the format check but do not correspond to real addresses.

How to use the CEP validator

  1. 1Type or paste the CEP into the main field.
  2. 2Click Process.
  3. 3See whether the format is valid or invalid.

Frequently asked questions

Does validation confirm that the CEP exists?

No. It only confirms the 8-digit format. Real existence requires a query to the Brazilian postal service database.

Do I need to type the hyphen?

No. The tool accepts with hyphen (01310-100) or without (01310100), also ignoring extra spaces.

What do the CEP digits mean?

The first 5 identify region and sub-region; the last 3 indicate the sector and distribution area within the city.
